A Miamian’s Review of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

“He who won’t be mentioned” at Fairchild

I hesitate to bring up the ‘C’ word that has consumed life as we know it.

It shouldn’t be the theme in every 2020 blog because it will not always be reality.

Hopefully that isn’t wishful thinking on my part.

I want the Corona Virus (COVID-19) to be a memory to whoever is reading this blog.

If its still 2020, then hang in there. This too shall pass!

One thing these times have reinforced is local travel.

Miami, Fl and the surrounding areas are more than just the glitz and glamour of South Beach.

Once life returns to “normal”, I may have seen my entire city through the eyes of a tourist.

Today’s local adventure takes us to the city of Coral Gables. The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a whopping 82 years old.

According to their map pamphlet, the garden is named after famous plant explorer Dr. David Fairchild (1869-1954). Dr. Fairchild traveled to almost every continent in search of unique plants that he could transport to America.

I can’t believe I’ve never visited. Last year I crossed out a botanical garden in Kingston, Jamaica off my list.

COVID restrictions caused all indoor portions to be closed including the butterfly conservatory (Wings of the Tropics).

Tram/tours are canceled.

Entrance tickets must be purchased in advance online.

Here are my top three reasons why you should make it out.

1. Answering the Call of Nature

“Netflixing and chilling” can get old really quick. Especially when done for months at a time.

The garden is a full outdoor experience.

Eighty-three acres should be enough to get your blood pumping and the Florida sunshine is far from shy.

TIP: Check the weather/rain chance before your visit. Bring an umbrella just in case!

Today had a 20% chance of rain and it came down for about 5 minutes.

Lizards, raccoons, and butterflies were out in number!

I saw signs warning of crocodiles, but no sightings.

On Saturdays, the garden offers various food and drink options.

Last month mangoes were celebrated with smoothies and salads.

This month they were replaced by avocados.

August is $12 days of summer so admission is half off.

I counted many picnic baskets in hand.

Bring a blanket. The garden would make a great outdoors date.

There is also a rainforest at the garden with cool mists for a quick refreshing.

TIP: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Don’t forget the repellant, sunscreen, water, and a hat. *Water Fountains are not available.

The one way path is 2 miles long.

2. Photographic Memories

I’m still learning my new camera and I’m always loojking for opportunities to practice.

I decided to do a photoshoot at the garden and also take pictures of the sights.

I brought my tripod along and set the timer to my heart’s content.

The sun’s beating is probably the only reason why I didn’t take more pictures. But the grounds are stunning.

Even the tree-lined drive up to the garden is a preview of the oasis to come.

I didn’t see any other tripods but they were lots of professional cameras.

I can’t wait to go back. There’s a variety of natural backdrops and no two areas look the same.

My favorite part of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden was the pool waterfall!!!

3. Special Events @ Fairchild Tropical

Weddings are very popular at the garden. Most recently, the option for virtual weddings was added.

Maternity photoshoots are always a good idea! Similar to the time I did a Design District photo walk, my head was brewing with ideas.

Whether you’re coming from near or far, don’t miss out on the serenity and breath of fresh air that is Fairchild.
