Cinco De Mayo in Cozumel, Mexico
Mexico is not short on beaches or water sports.
I live in Miami where I have access to both every day of the year.
Others are not that fortunate or may simply have a different preference.
If you’re like me, you tend to look for a little more on your travels.
Traveling is my adventure. I am what you would call a “culture” junkie.
My first trip to Cozumel, Mexico was on a Carnival cruise. The day we ported happened to fall on Cinco De Mayo.
I was excited and thought that would mean a greater celebration. But Mexico did not acknowledge the holiday.
Americans love it and that was apparent with all of the fun Mexican themed activities onboard the ship.
Discovering Mexico
I found the Discover Mexico Park by booking through Priceline’s excursions website.
The activity is called, “Flavors of Mexico; Chocolate, Tequila, and Tacos”.
If you’re not cruising, you can buy tickets in advance directly through the park’s website or on Groupon.
Priceline had a great combo deal for $87 per person. This included a chocolate making class, tequila tasting, lunch, access to the ground’s indoor/outdoor museum and a live show.
It was well worth it.
Taxis from the port were $10 each way.
From the literal moment of arrival, the offers for alcohol did not stop.
I’m not much of a drinker but I wasn’t about to pass up a “turn up” in Mexico.
I decided to jump on the Americanised Cinco de Mayo bandwagon!
I had 2 shots, a spicy margarita, a chocolate margarita and 3 glasses of tequila. That’s the most alcohol I’ve ever had in one day!
Our tour guide was right, the good stuff did not leave you in a drunken stupor.
Certified Aficionado
They take their tequila seriously at Discover Mexico and my certificate is proof of all the great information I walked away with.
I now know how to test the body of any glass of alcohol I’m drinking.
The agave plants (used to make tequila) were grown right on the park’s grounds.
The experience is very hands-on, all the way down to the chocolate making.
I love chocolate but the natural stuff is a bit bitter to the taste.

The indoor museum is filled with beautiful and rare Mexican antiques and artwork.
The outside portion is filled with different replicas of Mexican structures such as government buildings and Myan ruins. The attention to detail is astounding.

The day ended with the live cultural rain dance.
We watched as these men (small in stature but not lacking in boldness) climb up a high pole and hang upside. I had never witnessed this and you have to see it in person.

Every other activity was fun and a fantastic learning experience.
The tequila tasting had a very sophisticated vibe.
There is an onsite gift-shop and photographer/bracelet maker. Bring cash for the latter.
Song and Dance
The second cultural immersion (Mariachi, Tacos, Tequilla and Shopping) was booked directly with Carnival.
The cost was $59.99 per person. It included pick-up and drop off.
The excursion is held at a local restaurant named La Cocay.
The best part of the tour was the great show with the mariachi band. There was even a part at the end for audience participation.
I got up (not documented here) to show off my “skills” and danced with a few band members.
Alcohol flowed freely here too. Thankfully, this trip was a year later!
We enjoyed a tasty and authentic Mexican meal.
Afterward, we walked through the neighborhood. The tour ended with shopping at stores along the ocean.
Mexico is filled with a variety of activities to choose from. If you’re looking for something different, you can start with one of these tours.
Adventurous activities can take place anywhere. Culture can only be found at its source.

December 16, 2019 at 1:44 amHi Nina, sorry for the late response but the website did not show your comment right away. Mexico is great, hopefully you do find a virgin chocolate cocktail. I’m sure it will be just as yummy! 🙂
