Under Armour
How hard could it be to find a natural deodorant that works? The self-care aisle is filled with brands claiming to offer full protection without dangerous ingredients.
You should be able to buy one and use it confidently. I mean, that’s how it works with the ‘regular’ stuff.
This is a time when the public (especially women) are being bombarded about toxic ingredients found in deodorants. The three main culprits are aluminum, sulfates, and parabens.
The trio is found in shampoos, lotions, and soaps. Though many, if not all of us, have been exposed all of our lives. We are now being told to avoid these toxins.
Cancer and all manners of life-threatening ailments are being blamed as the result of repeated exposure to these chemicals.
Brand loyalty is threatened because our health is on the line. Like genes, many times, products are transferred from one generation to the next.
But no one is going to think much of grandma’s recommendations at this point! That still doesn’t mean the decision will be an easy one for most.
Humans are such creatures of habit that even a change like this could be very stressful. The product’s effects wouldn’t be known until application.
After making the switch, how would you know which brand to choose?
As a consumer, I was finding it extremely difficult to do the right thing.
Deodorant: For Healthโs Sake
Iโm by no means a health nut, but I thought it wouldnโt hurt to start small. I had an attachment to one brand.
But it was only because everything else either stopped working or agitated my skin.
There were days I went without deodorant or used less just to avoid the constant itching. It wasnโt such a big sacrifice to make the change.
When I thought of the words ‘natural deodorant’, the last thing I expected was any allergic reactions.
Natural comes from the word nature which has a direct link to our bodies. Any truly natural product shouldn’t trigger defensive hormones.
Once I began my search for a natural deodorant, I never knew it would take years to find โthe oneโ!
Anti-deodorant
The ordeal could have been shorter. I gave up after so many failed attempts.
The first try was with a popular brand that came highly recommended by a friend.
I was worried about the green color but figured that was due to its ‘pure’ ingredients. It kept me fresh but turned my underarms green.
From there, I moved to another natural brand that caused irritation. I’m aware that my skin is sensitive but I assumed a natural product would soothe it.
This led to me going back to the โregularโ stuff.
I felt convicted from time to time but I wasnโt ready to face the alternative.
Natural-Lie
I just wanted a deodorant that was safe, worked and didnโt cause an allergic reaction!
Three months ago, a video of a comedienne advocating against toxic deodorants went viral. This was my reminder that I needed to get back on the search.
I was definitely not looking forward to it. I was tired of being a lab rat.
One never knew how bad an allergic reaction could get.
The comedienne also shared that she used a mineral stone deodorant. She gave a disclaimer that it took a while for her body to get adjusted and she even carried it around with her.
Pit Stop
Out of an abundance of caution for my overall health, I ordered the same deodorant. I just wanted it to work so I could go back to not obsessing over perspiration smells.
After a few days of testing, it was taking my body a long time to mesh.
Iโm not an active person, nor am I outside for long periods of time. I would shower, apply the deodorant and the longest it would last is about two hours.
I didnโt even have to walk out of the door.
It astounded me that I could be home freezing in my AC and still smell the musty odor of my deodorant failing. I grew frustrated again and stopped using the stone.
My deodorantโs effectiveness is not something I should be thinking of all day. Neither was I a fan of carrying it around to reapply.
I longed for simpler times!
To make matters worse, Miamiโs springtimes were barely discernible from summer.
I took my venting to FB.
Raise your hand!
My post came from a place of humor. I said something to the effect of, โI was trying this natural deodorant thing but maybe I should wait until fallโ.
Who would have thought this would lead to my breakthrough?
Initially, I received a lot of laughing reactions and emojis. Two friends commented.
They each recommended a deodorant called Native. I was the only connection between the two women.
By this time, I was understandably skeptical.
I went online and looked up reviews. The large majority were positive.
I didn’t want to get my hopes high, yet it was refreshing to read the optimistic feedback.
Nativeโฆtake me away
One of the friends explained on the post that Native offered a sample size. This was a perfect way to not fully commit.
I went to my local Target and the sample size was not in stock. I ordered it via store pick-up.
As pictured, it fits in the palm of your hands. Don’t let the size fool you! It lasted longer than expected.
Since the container is small, I applied until I could feel the product in the center of my underarms.
The only scent Iโve tried is the coconut and vanilla. It smells wonderful!
I am still getting used to catching whiffs all day! Iโm always looking around to find the sweet source, then realize it’s me!
Iโm Sure
My long and arduous search has ended. Native is the all in one natural deodorant.
It smells divine, lasts, and doesnโt irritate. I traveled to Jamaica with the sample size.
It didnโt take up much room and fit easily in my mini bookbag.
The deodorant had passed the Florida weather test, so I took it a step further by testing it in the Kingston summer.
Native passed again!
If youโve been considering โgoing naturalโ or couldnโt find the right brand. Iโm pleased to tell you that youโve come to the right place.
Now, once I swipe on Native, I don’t think about it until the next time. I’m no longer consumed with the dread of knowing my deodorant is not working.
Life has enough unpleasantries and I don’t want to be one of them. How about you?
