Where there’s BBQ smoke…
Trust me, I was not looking for a new barbeque (BBQ) spot!
South Florida, especially Miami, is filled with them.
On the weekends in predominately Black neighborhoods, you can find a BBQ stand on every corner. They each have loyal customers and do well in sales.
Popular indoor spots are also scattered throughout the city. We might lack ‘In and Out’ chains but no BBQ shortages here.
Picky Eater
Although I love to eat, I’m slowly coming out of my box. This blogging journey is one way I’m becoming more experimental with food.
A Time article by Claire Suddath describes BBQ as “the real thing is cooked over indirect heat (usually a wood fire) for as many as 18 hours. The resulting flavor is a combination of smoke, meat juices, fat, and whatever spices or rub have been added”.
It was total happenstance that I heard of and tried Leroy’s BBQ Smokehouse.
My cousin had just begun her side-hustle as an Uber Eats driver. She kept mentioning how most of her pick-ups were for this new BBQ spot.
It was so sought after on the app that she decided to try it. The mouth-watering smells emanating from behind the counter and containers helped too.
Are you pulling my leg?
One day, while waiting for an order, she sampled the goods and made a purchase.
I love great food and it was only a matter of time before I took the drive. I trusted my cousin’s tastes completely!
The opportunity arose during one of the ‘beach’ holidays. I was off from work and invitation-less.
I thought it was the perfect day to try Leroy’s. My cousin recommended the collard greens and mac and cheese.
I Google‘d the address and directions.
Leroy’s is located in Hallandale between I-95 and Biscayne Blvd (U.S. 1).
A few parking spots are in front and some on the side of the small lot.
D-Day
The non-descript black building may have never caught your eye.
Watch your step after you pull on the heavy door.
The interior is dark and the pleasant smell of wood and smoke hits you immediately. There’s picnic tables set-up in the dining area and the ordering counter is off to the side.
I skipped the taste tasting and ordered the two meat combo. My meat choices were baby back ribs (6 bones) and chicken.
The employees willingly answered all of my questions and provided suggestions.
The order was served with two sides and a corn muffin (as pictured).
I planned on waiting until I got home to eat. But curiosity and hunger took over.
Love at First Bite
The order came with a variety of sauces to choose from. Each one was tested and I liked the tangy one best. (Ask for extra.)
I went straight for the ribs and dipped each bite into the sauce. The slivers of meat easily slid right off the bone!
They inherited a lifetime customer at first bite. The meat was tender and smoked to absolute perfection.
These ribs were not just placed on a grill. They are masterfully cooked in a wood smokehouse and that’s something I’m not used to in Miami.
Too Good to be True?
I was thinking that the sides could not be as good as my cousin stated. There’s no way my entire black to-go container was filled with all this deliciousness.
In all fairness, most BBQ joints are known mainly for their meats. I was willing to be forgiving with the sides.
I arrived home with three untouched ribs remaining.
It was now time to focus on the sides. (Just writing this makes me want to drive to Leroy’s!)
The collard greens were in the top two of the best I have ever tasted. I remembered seeing sliced red peppers which I usually pick out.
This time, there was no room for pause. The greens were tangy and flavorful! I couldn’t trace any bitterness either.
I can’t recall ever having white mac and cheese. The hesitation there was very brief!
All of the Above
All doubts about whether everything would taste good was obliterated!
Though I prefer mine warm, even the muffin was good. It was nutty and cinnamon flavored.
I have returned to Leroy’s on numerous occasions. Unfortunately, I’m a ‘go with what you know’ eater.
This is apparent in how I’ve barely scratched the menu’s surface!
I plan to change that soon since they have a wide selection to choose from.
Check out the menu, address and hours on their website. Don’t forget to come back and let me know what you thought!

November 8, 2019 at 2:34 pmYou’ve made me hungry! It’s usually those tucked away, nondescript, little places that serve the most amazing food. That’s been my experience with fried chicken. Thank you for the recommendation. My hubby loves BBQ and we’ll be visiting Miami soon.
