No Shame in my “airline ticket payment” Game!
Disclaimer: I haven’t used any of the following services for purchasing a “layaway” airline ticket.
I like to blog about my personal experiences. I debated writing this blog based on the disclaimer.
There comes a time (as any type of blogger) where a blog will simply be informational. I can share as I’m learning.
I was looking into possibly using Airfordable. Then I saw an online ad for Klarna.
The average person may not be aware of either. Here am I to enlighten.
If I could add a second disclaimer it would be: Don’t let anyone “shame” you for your travel payment methods.
It took me a while to accept and use the word “shame”. I used to think it was used too loosely.
I’ve read comments online that mocked the “buy now/pay later” payment method. Unless you’re paying for all of your trips upfront, it’s an ignorant argument.
It’s more ignorant if you’re using a credit card. It’s no different than any of these companies.
As a matter of fact, you may have a lower chance of going into debt by going this route.
An airline ticket and lodging can be the most expensive parts of travel.
If there is a way to break up payments to pay later, there shouldn’t be any guilt in doing so!
Klarna’s app boasts that it can be used with “any online retailer”.
The total is split into four interest-free installments (due every 2 weeks). The first one is due upfront, the remaining, later.
Klarna
Klarna is the newest of the 3 companies listed. Due to its newness, one of the cons (according to reviews) is the kinks still being worked out of the app.
That’s normal for any new app. Many potential customers left comments about the company being fraudulent.
They are not. All 3 companies are legit.
Step 1: Download app. (It’s currently 58.96 MB.)
Step 2: Sign Up (A verification link will be sent to your email.)
Step 3: Create a profile
The bottom of the screen will have the following categories (Shopping, Feed, Highlights, Purchases, and Pay).
TIP: You may need to restart your phone after downloading app.
Step 4: Click shopping and enter the name of the airline/website of your choice. The app will direct you to Google to select their website.
Step 5: Enter flight details, confirm your info on the Klarna app.
Step 6: Enter the dollar amount you’re spending. The app will give you a 4 payment breakdown.
Step 7: Create a Ghost Card (single-use prepaid card) account. Your personal debit/credit card is charged 20% of the total amount. At checkout, enter the Ghost card info.
Klarna APP
Ghost cards can only be used once. A new one would have to be generated per purchase. It expires after 24 hours.
According to the app, they “may” perform a soft credit check that will not impact your credit score”.
New accounts may have spending restrictions that relax over time.
Balances can be paid off early. You can download the Klarna app to see these details. Their website does not list the airline ticket info.
I got excited about Klarna, but I’m not too happy with the soft credit check. The next company on the list does the same credit check.
Affirm
Affirm is the same concept as Klarna (you can see their website or app). However, their website states “no late fees or penalties ever”.
Unlike Klarna’s “anywhere” wording, Affirm’s website states “thousands of sites and stores”. The example does list interest fees.
Airfordable
Airfordable (Black-owned) seems to be the best choice.
There is no credit check! You still make payments over time even though there is a service fee.
Their website specifies price protection.
- Sign up at airfordable.com
- In the installment calculator, you can enter flight details and select payments every 2, 3, or 4 weeks.
- Upload your screenshot of flight details (airport, dates, times, airline and total). The flight must be at least $200 and booked 19 days in advance.
- 4. Once you’ve completed installments, the e-ticket will be emailed.
The Airfordable website has a thorough FAQ section.
One thing I love about cruises is the ability to make payments over time. Now, these companies are giving the same option for air travel.
Air is usually the first travel booked. Now you have no excuses if finances have been stopping you from booking that airline flight!
You have travel tips at your disposal. This would be a great time to plan a solo trip if you haven’t done so already!
Have you heard of any of these? Would you use any?

January 3, 2020 at 1:04 pmHaha, I love your second travel disclaimer. Something good to remember in general: don’t let anyone shame you for your travels 😊 I’ve never heard of any of these companies! Thanks for sharing so much about each company, and that paying for a ticket by way of a payment plan is an option (I had no idea!), I’ve learned a lot and am excited to look into them more next time I book a flight!

January 3, 2020 at 1:06 pmI had never heard of these before. Whatever it takes to make the travel happen is good. Smallest plane I’ve ever flown in is my son’s two seater that he built. It’s my logo.

January 5, 2020 at 12:45 amThese apps are interesting. I don’t know that I would use something like that personally as I try to avoid creating unnecessary debt in any situation, I’d rather just pay it off and know that it’s been taken care of. That being said, if someone is suddenly in need of a plane ticket for a situation like a family emergency, they may not have done the saving that generally goes into preparing for a vacation.

January 5, 2020 at 2:42 pmHi Britt, you’re right everyone interested will have a different reason for booking. This is also good for those without credit cards.

January 12, 2020 at 6:48 pmI have actually used Klarna for flights and other things without a problem. It has really come in handy. I prefer it to credit cards. And I would recommend anyone interested to check it out.

January 13, 2020 at 9:13 amHi Toni, I’m so happy you had positive experiences. It’s a very short term payoff method without the fees and I can see why you prefer it to credit cards!
