Road Trip in New Normal

Masks and social distancing can now be added to worldwide travel lingo.

Though the travel industry is still taking a hit from COVID 19, it’s not at a complete pause.

Many still fear the small enclosure of a plane ( plus traveling restrictions.)

This has caused a spike inย road trips.

I personally donโ€™t think any form of travel is much safer than the other, as the virus is so contagious.

Iโ€™ve seen a lot of fellow travelers post that local trips will be their M.O. for 2020 and the near future.

Iโ€™ve practically been to every Caribbean island. Ironically 2020 was going to be the year I ventured to Europe.

We see how that has turned out.

Good thing I appreciate travel far and near.

My last trip was a combination of both.

5 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL ROAD TRIP
5 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL ROAD TRIP

I love road trips and Iโ€™m blessed enough to live in Florida where youโ€™re never short on options.

From our possibly number one attraction in Orlando (Disneyworld) to Key Westโ€ฆthe possibilities are endless.

Our northern and western cities are not too shabby either!

Iโ€™m a blogger..a traveling one at that. So you may be thinking, โ€œanother road trip tip blog”? Yes, keep reading because youโ€™ve never heard โ€œmy versionโ€.

1. Be Nice

This piece of advice is nothing new. I wish there were signs on roadways with rules that each driver must follow.

Oh wait, there are signs. Oftentimes we choose to disregard them.

5 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL ROAD TRIP

Iโ€™m used to rude drivers in Florida. For some reason I imagined Arizona being different.

Boy was I wrong!

I was tailgated, cut off, ‘flashed at’ but I guess I have seen worse.

Most of the time being nice is a two-way street.

If it’s raining to the point of low visibility, remaining behind me at a slow and safe distance can save you from an accident.

Also, if you follow my lead and donโ€™t get impatient because Iโ€™m not going 20 over the speed limit, you may not get a speeding ticket.

2. Safety

Some may say safety means staying home and only traveling for โ€œnecessitiesโ€. Those people are entitled to their opinion!

ย If you venture out donโ€™t forget the basics like locking your door each and every time.

A follower on IGย  got her rental car vandalized and purse stolen on a recent trip.

A big no-no is not to leave valuables visible in the car. If you choose to store them in the trunk, please know that is still risky.

I forgot my wallet at home on my first trip to Jamaica. Adding debit/credit cards to apps like Apple Pay/Western Union can save you headaches in the long run.

Reading is fundamental as is relates to safety! If driving, make sure you park correctly to avoid tows and parking tickets.

3. Budget

This would probably be the first order of business for a road trip. But the post is randomly numbered.

Iโ€™m a ‘list girl’, so I usually write down the maximum amount I will spend on a trip and all the expenses involved.

The biggestย decision is determiningย if you will drive your own car, rent or take public transportation like Greyhound.

Your own car would require maintenance and tire checks if they are not up to date.

Renting a car should not come with those worries but always pay for insurance/road side assistance if youโ€™re not using your own.

I briefly worked as a AAA dispacther for a major car rental company. Iโ€™ve seen flat tires, accidents, cars stuck in ditches, locked keys and so much more.

TIP: Add roadside assistance # to your phone or have it close.

Food will also be a big part of your budget. Factor in eating out, rest stops, snacks (pre/post purchase), or making your own.

TIP: Bring a small cooler for drinks.

TIP: Donโ€™t forget handy wipes/sanitizer/masks

Gas and tolls can also add up.

If you go the car rental route, donโ€™t forget to fill-up before returning vehicle. Also check car for damages/smoke before you leave the lot.

4. Choose the Right Companions

This is a solo travel blog but even I make exceptions.

If you canโ€™t go alone, choose your travel partners wisely. They can make or break a trip.

Also, if you plan a group trip, be prepared to be the last man/woman standing. Whatever you do, donโ€™t cancel the trip outright and miss the opportunity of a lifetime.

TIP: Avoid close quarter trips with people you barely know.

5. Comfort/Packing for a Successful Road Trip

As Iโ€™ve gotten older, my legs have made it known that I need compression socks for long trips. They help blood to circulate and may prevent you from getting dangerous blood clots.

Pillows are great whether you use them for neck or back.

Dress comfortably in clothing/shoes that you can move freely in.

Make sure to check weather alerts especially if youโ€™re visiting a place with canyons like Arizona.

If youโ€™re driving, donโ€™t forget to add your luggage to the vehicle.

Last but not least, bring your camera and make sure you have a way to keep it charged.

These are simple yet essential tips to enjoy your next road trip. I had an amazing time on my last trip!

We have enjoyed roadtrips this year due to the pandemic. Sanitizers and masks are the new normals and also be aware of social distancing. Some people just forget the appropriate spacing when ventring out.

We are taking our first road trip vacation this year as a family of 5! Although excited, we are definitely nervous about the other drivers (and of course the budget). I will definitely make to bring a cooler and a pillow and thnk you for the tips!

Number 4 is so vital. The problem for me is that if I go on a roadtrip with my family I can’t choose.

Joking aside, these photos look incredible and I would love to take a road trip with my family across the US. The scenery looks so incredible.
